Sorry for the delay, all. I received word back when I put the comic on hold that my grandmother had been admitted to the hospital for pneumonia. Turns out, it was a heart attack. She died a week later, though not before I got to spend a few days with her in the CCU. My family is small but relatively close, so we all made our way to New York to settle affairs and help get things in order. I’m back home now, trying to get my household and work schedule back in order, but I don’t anticipate being later than 2 April as I originally planned. I will try to have the site structured appropriately by then, so expect some ups and downs over the next 72 hours.
That being said, there is still unfinished business with which I may need to help. Should that happen, my weekends will be entirely shot. Keep in mind that for the next two months or so, I may skip a Sunday update without warning. There’s not many of us in the family, so at times like this all hands need to be on deck (if you’ll allow me to pilfer a maritime metaphor).
I hope y’all understand, and that this doesn’t keep you from checking in or subscribing to the RSS feed. This has always been a free time hobby for me, and right now free time will be at a premium.
The comic is temporary on hold through the rest of March due to illness in the family. Expect a normal schedule to return for the Thursday 2 April update at this point, but stay tuned for more details. If time allows, I will try to drop bits of entertainment in the interim but no promises.
It’s amazing how historical events can get “shanghaied” by corporations, people, or even the cultures who should know better and turned into mass-commercial marketing events. It took me many years to realize that the good Saint Patrick wasn’t known for turning beer green. I still don’t know what the remembrance of martyred Christians has to do with racy greeting cards and scarfing down chocolates in heart-shaped boxes. The current celebrations seem quite incongruous with the original events, and even though I rail against it whenever I get the chance I still follow the piper out of town, dancing along whatever crazy path he should wander.
Humanity is doomed.
I have officially upgraded to Comicpress! There are a few last tweaks I will be installing over the next few days, and some URLs may move, so don’t go around updating all your links just yet. Most of the comics are not yet uploaded to the new engine, so I will maintain links to the old site for posterity until that is complete, but the old site will no longer be updated. It is strictly for archival purposes until all of the content is moved over.
I am looking for three types of comments: (1) Anything that doesn’t look good, or can be improved graphically, (2) Anything that is functionally broken, and (3) Anything you can think of that will help me make a better, more accessible site. Don’t write in about the gallery content yet, I am still tweaking that code and I know it doesn’t work right. That being said, I also accept compliments.
Enjoy! Over the next few days I’ll get the redirects and such straightened out, and let you know when the URLs are set for good. Thanks for sticking with me.

I really enjoyed this experiment. Originally, it was to be a much longer run and the Main Character was supposed to be the bad guy. He figured it out at the very end when he confronted the Lobster, who was known to drive men insane. Instead of insanity, the Lobster brought clarity of thought, and revealed to the Main Character that he was indeed the perpetrator. Because of life events, I had to cut back on my posting schedule and retool the strip. I still wanted the MC to be guilty, but the more I cut the less sense it made. I came up with framing him for the Thursday strip, and it’s a decision I am really happy with.
I hope you enjoyed this detour as much as I did. It’s over, and I will return to the normal course of comicking in the next installment.
Paul Southworth has posted the last Ugly Hill ever! Send him hate mail and tell him to get on some other project, ASAP! That, or tell him to play more Left 4 Dead now that he’s not drawing…
And Paul! If you want to sell that Cintiq, I know where you can find a buyer. Hint, hint!
Imperfection Settlement: Open And Shut
March 12th, 2009 | by LouMI said I’d use the red to tie things together, so I used it to bring the dress and the lobster’s claws to the same level. This is not how I planned the story originally: I’ll talk about alternate stories on Sunday. The story line is essentially done, but I will be tying it up in the magical world of color on Sunday.
Imperfection Settlement: Red Claws
March 8th, 2009 | by LouMI tried to leave a lot of blank space in this one, to play around with it. It’s okay, but I like the previous strip better.
Imperfection Settlement: Arbitration

March 3rd, 2009 | by LouMToday’s strip was all inked by hand. Every last bit. The color int he last panel, of course, was digitally painted, but all those black fills I did with a brush. I really like the way this one turned out. I felt last strip was too dark. It would probably hold up well side by side with a bunch of strips in similar style, say if it were compiled into book form at some point, but on its own it really seemed to drag the page down. The next installment will also involve quite a few fills, but I think it will look really good.
