Every story has several possible endings, which is why I enjoy drawing these strips. Of course, this strip is a humorous one, so it is reasonable to assume that it will not end badly. Even still, there’s a whole host of potential for this story, potential that will never be released. Strips like these hint towards the darker endings, the endings which occur in life and we generally try to escape in the funny pages. Some comics, especially in comic book form, deal with these endings, of course. It’s not my desire to deal with them here, but these strips remind me that they are there, and that there are manifold stories left to tell in different contexts.
Two updates on schedule? In a row? I know, you guys must be the luckiest fans in the world! Things are starting to slow down in my life, so I’m finally close to catching up on everything that’s backed up around the house. Hopefully, there will be no additional delays on the part of the comic.
I had this in my sketchbook, with roughs for all the characters and the script scribbled in. I even wrote, “Watters0n-style word balloons”. I didn’t go with that in the end, I did freehand balloons which I don’t particularly like. It’s odd that when I am thinking of a specific thing, I’ll refer to another artist’s style. It’s just easier that way.
The observant of you will notice that Watterson’s balloon style is set inside closed panel borders, where I leave my panel borders open in the text balloons to tie together the white space. Clearly, I was referring to a “half-Watterson.” Great. Now I’m inventing terms. Comic illustrating: The new skateboarding?
I’m sure you all know David Reddick of Legend of Bill (http://www.legendofbill.com). You’d better, since I pimp his comic regularly here. A while back I did a guest strip for him. Now his first book is close to having enough pre-orders, a book which will have my guest strip in it! There’s a bunch of strips by David and other talented artists, too, but that’s just gravy. This will be the first book I have ever been printed in, and in celebration of that milestone, I have the deal of a lifetime for you:
If you pre-order his book, not ONLY will you get a book that has one of my strips in it, I will also send you (at no charge) a sketch! Just get me a receipt of some sort, and I’ll ship it out.
BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE! You get the book with one of my strips. You get a piece of art from me. I’ll also throw in a whole bunch of strips by David Reddick, a $100 value, free with purchase!
Order now, I only have so much time to draw and so much money to spend on postage. I reserve the right to withdraw this offer, of course, since it’s totally out of my pocket. Let’s put David over the top and get those books shipping!

Sorry it’s been a quiet month for me, y’all. I was out in Colorado last weekend, for what turned out to be mostly some very needed R&R. I will say this: I was impressed to have 3G service hiking between ski towns not too far from the Continental Divide. I don’t know how seamless it was since my phone was off most of the time. Still, it was quite impressive.
That being said, I am going to put up something tomorrow. Hopefully a strip, maybe some gallery stuff, but I’m back and though I have full weekends for a good month I intend to get back on that horse. Expect more regular updates, probably gallery stuff as well for when I am behind on my schedule. I will not be able to really slow down until October, but things will be a little easier and that will make all the difference in my update schedule.
There is no comic tonight, but I think you will all understand in a moment…
I will be one of roughly one hundred artists featured at the Cartoon Art Museum’s Monsters of Webcomics Virtual Gallery. This is huge! I am at a major cartoon art museum! Please go visit the site and learn more, or if you are in the San Francisco area, visit the exhibit and take pictures for me. I will gladly offer up some art for good pictures showing my work on display. It runs through December 6, and I don’t think I’ll get out there in time.
The exhibit opened August 8, which was also another auspicious occaison: My sister’s wedding! I was asked to do a custom comic book for her wedding, and I have included it on the site. Certain parts of the book (liner notes) were left out, but the comic itself and the cover are now up on the main link bar in their entirety. For a limited period of time, i am willing to sell extras I had around for $5 shipped to pretty much anywhere in the U.S., as long as I don’t lose my shirt on First-Class Large Envelope prices. A quick survey of the USPS site says this shouldn’t be a problem. If you don’t think you’re eligible I’ll still be glad to send off a copy: Shoot me an e-mail and we’ll figure out postage.
I do not have a storefront set up for many reasons, so if you are interested please send me an e-mail. That is the only way to secure a copy of these one-of-a-kind pieces. They are overruns from the wedding printing itself, and have the right edges of pages 1 and 3 cut off because of margin discrepancies. They are still readable, however, and are actual copies that were going to be distributed at the wedding (overruns and invitees who did not attend).
In closing, I hope you understand why I didn’t post a four-panel comic today. Enjoy this four-page mini-comic I spent the past month working on and if you’re in San Francisco, go see my exhibit! Me, I’m going to sleep like a…hrm…hibernating bear? See, my creativity is totally tapped. Hopefully it will return in time for Wednesday’s comic. Good night, and thanks for everything, y’all!
I used my fountain pen on the outer panels, and my Pentel brush on the inner panel where the shot was more close-in. The only other thing is that I did the rough pencils and scripting beforehand, which made things move a lot faster. Pencils, ink, scanning and painting took roughly an hour and a half as opposed to two to three hours. I highly recommend it.
